We had a busy, busy day today!

We started our day with the first part of the MAP test for math.  We will take the second part tomorrow and will be done with MAP until winter break.  As soon as I have all the scores I will communicate those with everyone!  I was so proud of all my students for the effort they put into taking the test.  Sometimes, the questions can be REALLY hard.  They never gave up and kept trying!  Awesome job :)

Today in reading we continued working on our op and ot word families.  We wrote op and ot words on our white boards.  Then we circled the letters that make the op and ot sound.  They LOVE using the white boards.  First grade enthusiasm at its finest!!  We also learned the word, blowing, and wrote it in our vocabulary journals.

We started talking about creating images while we read today.  Please work on this at home with your students while they are doing their reading logs or any other reading they might be doing.  We talked about using our senses and feelings to make the images.  Making images while we read helps us to understand and remember the book better.

Today, we created an image of a strong, hard wind.
We felt cold wind on our face.
We smelled crisp, cool air.
We saw, leaves blowing off trees.
We heard, the leaves rustling on the ground.
This is a hard concept so the more practice students get with it, the better!!!

We reviewed all day today in math.  Our math test will be tomorrow!  Everyone seems to be doing well with this chapter and I'm eager to move on to subtraction. Students really need to know and use the strategies to help them add.  They can count on from the bigger number.  Sometimes with this strategy, having a number line helps.  They can also use number bonds to help them add.   I hope the test reflects all of their hard work.

I will be sending home the Reading Test from last week tomorrow and the next day.  The tests were all over the place.  I am pulling groups of students who need to be retaught on different parts of the test so if you feel your child missed a lot on the test, don't worry, we are going back over the sticky points!  Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hope everyone had a great day!

Ms. Jervis
