Today

R E A D I N G

This week in reading/phonics we will be working with the short i sound.  Today, students sounded short i words out using beginning, middle, and ending sounds.  They used their fingers to show me how many sounds each words made, and they circled the letter that makes the short i sound in words.  They also identified short i words in our poem, Wynken, Blynken, and Nod.  We played the eraser game using our high frequency words this week.  This is a game where I put the words on the board, we read, spell, and study them, then I erase one and have volunteers come back to the board to add the word.  Here is a picture of the erase game.

We continued on with read to someone and added LISTEN to reading today for our Daily 5.  Students shared computers and had a great time with this activity today.  We are hoping to get headphones in the classroom soon!!   Please remind your students that using our computers is a privilege.  If anyone has any old disc-mans, ipods, tape players, etc. we could really use them in the classroom for listen to reading.  Once students are able to start making choices with their reading time, I would LOVE to have more things for them to practice listen to reading on.

In math today, we continued on with subtraction.  We read the book, The Action of Subtraction.  This is a really cute book.  Brady even made a subtraction sentence on his own using the walkers as an example.  He said,  "there were 3 walkers in the classroom, 1 left, how many walkers are there now??"  2!!!!  I was so proud of him for thinking of this all on his own.  Such smart students :)  We practiced counting on and counting back.  Please help your children to NOT get confused.  This looks a LOT like what they learned with addition.  In counting on they need to start with the smaller number and see how many steps they have to take to get to the bigger number.  Using a number line REALLY helps with this concept.  In counting back, they start with the bigger number, and count back to the smaller number.

In science, we learned about the lifecycle of a frog.  We watched a video clip on Brainpopjr.com which they loved.  They learned some pretty neat facts about frogs and their life cycle.  Ask them the stages of the life cycle to see if they can tell you!   We then created a life cycle in the classroom with a cut and paste activity.  All students did EXCELLENT on this activity and were so eager to bring it home.  I will send it tomorrow.

Thanks to everyone for sending in more box tops!  We had a LOT this morning, I was so proud.  Keep 'em coming this week!  The deadline for the first round is this Friday.  ALSO, don't forget the permission slip for Boyd Orchard is due October 5.

Hope everyone has a great night!
